>> let's check weather and traffic. steve is here. it's a little too quite in the weather for you, isn't it. >> here, locally, yes. >> we could sure use rain. a little on tuesday but doesn't look like there's anything coming across the highway next to us. highs 50s, low to mid 60. >> there's a bus accident from man jose. it happened less than an hour ago where a car ran a red light at the corner of east capital expressway. a big intersection in san jose. very close to the airport. the traffic is going to be affected. matt keller is on the way. we'll have a live report from the scene coming up soon. this say look at northbound 1 o'brien 1 approaching the 80s. that traffic is off to a good start. >> a road is closed right now because of a fatal accident. ktvu has been on the bay shore

road since 4:30 this morning. she is back thousand with more on why this is such a big investigation. >> the accident scene is large out here. it's described as 200-yards, the length of two football fields. i want to show you a measurement that gives us an idea of how far the stretches are at one of the curves. this is the start of the measuring tape that stretches all the way down the street. hard to see where it ends and that's because this scene kind of stretches around this corner. one vehicle involved -- we are standing with the accident may have started from. i want to show you where the car involved ended up. >> here's what happened. about 2:20 this morning, one person in the vehicle, the driver was coming down east bay shore road right at the 1700

block for some unknown reason she lost control. he hit a fire hydrant and a power pole and got ejected from the car. the car kept on going down the road and ended up in the front of a public storage facility that is along east bay shore road. police got out here and then within a couple of hours that reporter also arrived and took the victim from the scene. we're taking a live look at the scene. the coroner just left. there's a mobile command unit further down the street. they had to -- the headlights you can see a bunch of cars passing by. that's highway 101, southbound direction just coming up past this accident scene. so it will be awhile. investigators say it's going to take awhile for them to take all of these measurements as at the try to piece together what happened. live here in redwood city. ktvu, channel 2 news. >> police in newark are investigating an overnight crash that injured a woman.

it happened about midnight at dairy and magnolia. the woman's car crashed into two parked cars before smashing into a tree. she was rushed to the hospital but we don't know her condition. police are investigating the possibility another car left the scene of thcrash. >> happening now in south africa, the judge in the oscar pistorius bail hearing still summarizing the case. moments ago the judge criticized the lead investigator that was taken off the case after he was charged with attempted murder in a separate incident. we have been listening to the judge for the past hour and a half, since 4:30 this morning in a live audio feed from the courtroom. he discussed media coverage, major arguments in the case but no decision on bail yet. courtroom observers describe the speech as painful. legal experts expect bail will be given saying the prosecution used a 4 day hearing to push the defense to reveal it's strategy before the

full trial. >> which is tragic what happened to reeva and tragic what happened to him. we all support him. she cannot talk. [indiscernible] >> the defense argued that pistorius is not a flight risk because he can't slip through airport security due to his fame and prosthetic legs. if he does get bail, the track star could return to training as soon as next week. stay with us here at ktvu news, we're listening in to the courtroom procedure going on right now in south africa. we'll announce that on bail once it's been announced. >> time now 6:05, an oakland family in mourning after their loved one was targeted in a shooting on the las vegas strip. you see him here in a music video, he was shot while driving his car yesterday morning. the suspect who was driving a black range rover is still out there on the loose this morning. investigators is a the confrontation started with an argument in the valet area of

the hotel. then it continued on to the have a gas strip. we talked to her father who says his son was an aspiring rapper with no criminal record. >> have to go deal with it. i have to go and mourn my son's death. i have to mourn it. >> the car smashed into a taxi cab which then burst into flames killing the two people inside. he leaves behind a son and two daughters. >> in overnight news, a medical helicopter tear carrying three people crashed in oklahoma city. it happened just a few hours ago. now two people on board died and the third was carried to the hospital in critical condition. one person on the ground was also injured while trying to help. investigators, again, this is in oklahoma city and investigators are trying to figure out if a snowstorm maybe to blame for that crash. >> also this morning, homicide detectives in oakland are looking for suspects in a

deadly shooting. it happened around 9:00 last night at 79th and mcarthur boulevard. police say they found the victim inside a car that was riddled with bullets. family members say at that victim was a man in his late 30s. it's still not clear what lead up to the gun fire. happening right now, a student it is in at city college of san francisco. students are occupying a campus building in a protest that began late yesterday. we're joined now with the latest on the take over and police reaction. >> well, they were sleeping, a lot of them were up and everybody is stretching and getting ready for a meeting. they'll be discussing their next move in about an hour. there's about two dozen protestors here and they're in a fight to save this community college. last night, dozens of students took turns talking while san francisco college's chief of police looked on.

students say they're angry about proposed cuts in a meeting that didn't happen. students were told the chancellor was out of town. they are demanding more transparency from her. >> you want accountability. >> you definitely like that. a lot of people really don't know what's going on. we really want to know what's really going on and what needs to be done to keep our school going. >> now, all of this comes as city college fights to keep it's accreditation and avoid closure. the school has until march 15th to submit a plan. now, there are currently a couple of officers here on the overnight shift to guard the hall but because protestors have not been destructive or disruptive they're allowing them to stay. that's an order from the cans already. why one student says the accreditation issue is merely a smoke screen. >> yes, we're looking at

highway 4. highway 4 is getting busier although it is not stop and go here. you will see slow traffic as you drive through antioch and a lot of slow traffic there. we're also looking at the commute as if you're driving on westbound bay bridge. there's a little bit of a back up. the lights aren't on yet but they should be coming on soon and the morning commute is going to be effective because of a bus accident. we have more on that coming up soon. 6:09, let's go to steve. >> thank you. >> happy friday everybody. clear skies out there. it will be another nice day. we could use a little rain because things don't look good going forward. in fact, they look grim as we head toward end of february and even early march but maybe things will save us in march. i have seen that about 10 or 15 days and not much there in the rain department. everything is back east. looks like it's going to park it back there. 45 in san francisco to start. high today of 58. sunny side up. 30s and 40s on the temperatures now.

not far away from the antioch temperature. 36-37. there's the 45 san francisco. half moon bay at 40. clear, cold, the quite, mountain view 38 but sunny veil, they're all around 33 or 34. san jose is at 39. the system tuesday turned from this kind of a system to this kind of a system. we have seen all the snow in kansas city and all the way into the great lakes. mixed precipitation in washington and severe weather down to the deep south. covering a big portion of the country. over the next 7 to ten days where most of the weather will be. sunny today and temperatures coming up a little bit. we'll slide back a little bit on the temperatures tomorrow. it will be warmer today, a weak system will move into the north. it won't do much but cool us down and give us clouds. we're mild -- patchy low clouds, a little breezy at times. mid 60s for a few.

welcome back. two helicopter pilots rescued a hiker who was being stalked by a mountain lion. it happened last weekend on the popular stevens trail. the hiker made a possess desperate 911 call saying the mountain lion was quickly coming at him. the helicopter pilot saw him frantically waiving a flashlight. the mountain lion was just 20 feet in front of him. the sound of the helicopter probably saved that hikers life. >> i have never scared off a mountain lion before using a helicopter. >> i shutter to think what

would have happened if he wouldn't have had a cell phone or something to call for help. >> well, fish and wildlife warden later went to that hiking trail and put up warning signs but he says he was forced to shoot and kill that mountain lion because it guessively came at him. >> time is 61:00. the fbi concluded its search of a well looking for possible victims of two sere yell killers. they were serging it last month after the convicted killer told investigators he and his late police had dumped bodies there years ago. the fbi says there were no human remains in that well. >> the fbi caught in a sex scandal. cracking down on improper behavior. some agents sent explicit texts. a worker planted a bug if a

office. another was arrested in a child pornography operation and one was arrested after paying for sex at a massage parlor. >> we're one week away from automatic government spending cuts. as she reports from our washington d.c. news room, americans are split on what should be done. >> pam, not all americans understand exactly what these automatic budget cuts would mean for them t. is what the latest research poll shows. 40% of those polled believe the automatic government budget cuts should be next friday. 33% say it should be delayed. republicans and independents are split over the decision and even a third of democrats favor it taking effect. there's some that wrongly believe they will only hurt the military or those in washington but it mandates an average of

10% in cuts for federally funded programs. that includes before and after school programs like head start and education overall. school assists cross the country are bracing for more than $1 billion in cuts and the irs would have to cut back at a time when american versus questions about their income tax returns and want their refunds as soon as possible. we'll take a closer look at how the cuts will affect border security and natural disaster help plus what each party is proposing. live in washington, ktvu channel 2 news. >> time is 6:17. a man convicted of a shooting in east oakland almost 7 years ago may have islamabad name cleared today. ronald ross has been there after being convicted of attempted murder and assault. he maintained he was innocent. now prosecutors are asking a judge to throw out his conviction. the district attorney's office says there's no evidence he committed the crime and the victim says he never thought

ross was the man who shot him. the judge could order ross freed at a hearing later this morning. >> schools in san francisco could gain almost $4,000 per student under a new proposal by the governor. the funding increases will be phased in over a five year period and it will not be distributed evenly across the state. school disstrict with a higher percentage of low income students and english language learn establish would get more money. san francisco has almost 15,000 english language learners and 20,000 low income students. it would also give more local control over how they spend their money. >> former secretary of state madeline albright is in the bay area today. she is being hosted by the common wealth club. first series sweep will be at the fairmont hotel in san francisco for a lunch program, reception and book signing. >> then in the evening she is making an appearance at the cultural hall.

it's going to be a beautiful day today. a little chilly out there. lots of 30s. 31 at kenwood and cold reading but it won't take long to start warming up. lots of sunshine on the forecast menu today. in fact, warmer temperatures. it's been a slow process since tuesday when we had upper 40s, remember that? upper 40s with snow, hail and thing versus slowly recovered. 60, 62 today. one degree warmer in san francisco but it will be sunny, 58 concord from 51 to 63 and san jose cool yesterday. 62 degrees today. 30s for many and mid 30s for some. livermore is in there. concord. not far. that's 32 in napa. lots of lower 30s toward and i want you to get around park wood side 33. san jose at 39. lot of 30s. a few high clouds but no big deal. a little bit warmer today but it's a dry forecast.

the system will come in tomorrow but it will stay north and east of us and we get a little cool down and partly cloudy skies and after that everything is sunny and warmer weather until we head toward next week. 60s or a few 50s but closer to average for this time of year. we'll ease up into a cooler pattern saturday and then warm it right back up next week. >> thank you. japan's safety board now says it knows what is causing some of the problems with boeings dream liner jets. cracks in cockpit glass are blamed on improper taping and breaking problems were blamed on a faulty part. but investigators in japan and the u.s. say they're no close tore figuring out the reason for the battery issue. boeing is meeting to propose a temporary mix to problem with the light yum ion battery. >> meantime, united is removing all of it's 787s through early june. it could put dream liners back in service between tokyo and

breaking news right now, olympic track star and murder defendant oscar pistorius is being released from jail. the judge made the announcement just moments ago. here's pistorius. legal experts expected had he would get bail. they say the four day hearing that's taking place say preview of the upcoming trial. >> prosecutors wanted to see the defense case while the defense lawyer tried to plant seeds of doubt in the police investigation. now, again, oscar pistorius has just been granted bail in south africa. stay right here with ktvu throughout the morning. we expect to hear from both side oren the case and we'll bring you all the details. >> time is now 6:25, the ferry is so popular with computers they can't keep up the demand. parking lots fill up. the operators in charge of the

the judge gave him bail before the olympic track star. now the judge spent about two hours summarizing going over the case. pistorius is accused of killing his girlfriend. the judge said he decided to give pistorius bail for several reasons including the fact that pistorius is not a flight risk. and that releasing him would not cause public outrage. now a will the of legal experts expected the bail would be granted. they said the prosecution used the four day hearing to push the defense to reveal it's strategy before the 4th full trial started. the prosecution also accused pistorius of being a violent person bent on killing his girlfriend, reeva steenkamp. >> this is tragic what has rapped to reeva and tragic what's happened to him. yes, we all support him. she can't talk -- [indiscernible] -- >> well, the defense argues that oscar pistorius is not a flight risk. he wouldn't try to escape

because he can't slip through airport security in large part due to his fame and also having prosthetic legs. his coach says the track star could go back to training as soon as next week. again, he has been granted bail in the case where he is accused of killing his girlfriend. stay right here with ktvu. we hope to hear from both side of the case when they come out of the courtroom in south aftercarpal tunnel syndrome breaking news from the south bay, a car coe lieded at a busy intersection in san jose. matt keller joins us now from the scene. you're at east capital expressway with a look at what's happening, matt a car ran a red light and smashed right into the vta bus. the spokesperson told me that one passenger was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. 13 other passengers were here on the bus. daniel to the bus, as you can see is on the right front side

near the passenger entrance. we're told the car had extensive damage and was towed away. police say that the driver took off after the crash. capital is open in all directions this morning. now i'm told a tow truck is on the way and is going to be towing this bus away from this intersection here and again, this is an express bus. we're still working on where this bus ' final destination was this morning. but all had taken off and minor injuries. >> reporting live in san jose, ktvu channel 2 news. >> we're also following developing news from redwood city. a road is closed now. police are still out there searching for answers for what may have caused a deadly accident. >> ktvu has been out there since had 30:00 on bay shore road. you're back now. this is a pretty big crime scene. >> yes it does stretch a good portion of bayshore road where we're standing. they didn't want to talk but

they're trying to get to work. police are telling them it maybe a couple of hours before they can get down to their place of employment which is down the road where where they standing. we can show you a couple of things in the roadway. there's a piece of the vehicle sitting out here right in the roadway as they take measurements and try to piece together what happened. in the distance you can see headlights and just beyond the lights that is highway 101 as it passes by the accident scene and this is right before the seaport wood site accident so you can see this accident scene from the freeway as you pass on through here. where we're standing, just behind the police tape is where this accident started. i want to show you where it ended up. police are investigating it and it's the length of two football fields.

this happened about 2:20 this morning. there was a woman driving the vehicle. he lost control for some unknown reason. she hit a fire hydrant and a power poll sending water shooting into the air. they turned that off and she got ejected upon impact apparently and then her car just kept on going down bay shore road. a good distance before coming to a stop in front of a public storage unit. police got out here on scene. they called in the coroner. the coroner left a little after 5:00 this morning and since then they have been taking measurements. again, this is going to be a long process, it's a fatal accident so they want to take their time and get as much information as they can before they open the roadway back up but we have seen them turn around a lot of vehicles and keep people from getting to their place of employment because they can't let anyone walk through the accident scene. >> we have been talking to police and trying to figure out when they'll have a better one

him. >> he has a previous burglary conviction and is not allowed to own a gun. >> president obama is holding events across the country in support of the gun violence reduction plan. this is day of action. it's the first national mobilization since the group organizing for action was launched in january. volunteers who helped president obama get elected are now trying to help him get his policies through congress. today's events include rallies phone banks and candle light vigils. here in the bay area, several events are taking place as part of the day of action. at 11:00 this morning a press conference is scheduled in front of congresswoman bash bra lee's office in oakland to avoid support for the gun violence reduction plan. at 5:00 this evening, there will be a vigil to end gun violence. that will be at the ferry terminal and then at 6:00, a candle light vigil. now meantime ktvu news went undercover to investigate the big money assault weapon

business in reno. that story is coming up at 6:45. >> time is now 6:37. happening now san francisco, a student it is in at city college of san francisco. some of the students camped out overnight. >> it's losing it's accreditation and possibly closing down if it doesn't adopt financial reforms. the students want more information about the school's action plan and they're demanding to meet with the interim cans already. >> we wanted some assurance that whatever needs to be done if we got a chance to speak to her and hear from her we would have a better idea of what's going on. >> make sure you stay with us for the continuing coverage. tara has been there since 4:30 this morning. she'll be back at 7:00. >> now 6:38 is the time.

there's a look down there. >> it looks good. especially on highway 24 which i want to show you but i want to mention that highway 4 is antioch is slow, backed up through most of antioch beginning near hill crest and continuing all the way out to almost pittsburgh there and then it loosens up for bay point, 24 as you look live here. walnut creek and oakland it is not a bad drive. bay bridge toll plaza, delay stretches for about 10 minute drive time here. no major problems on the way to the city t. is a look at the bridge on the map here. the traffic looks good. it's looking very good. the drive time is 13 minutes from 238. i'm not sure it's going to stay this way but right now it's a good time to go. let's go to steve. >> thank you, sir. happy friday everybody. a little cold this morning. i've seen a lot of 30s. i was just looking ability ten readings of 33 degrees. now, lafayette also 33.

the coldest i could find. i didn't dig that deep but kentwood, 31 degrees is the coldest. and 31 napa airport. it will be breezy. a little cooler saturday. weak system coming in. it will cool us down and give us partly cloudy skies and we return it sunday for warmer weather and looks very quite next week. staying warm. we're ending february without any rain which is not good. we need the rain because everything is going to be back east. some of the 7, 10, and 15 day outlooks keep a huge system back east and nothing but high pressure overus for a long, long time. occasionally higher clouds just kind of scoot down from the northwest but no big deal. 62 today. san francisco bump you up one. concord from 61 to 62 today and san jose up 4. there's a napa 32. santa rosa is in there. san jose 39 but i have seen 35, 36, not far away.

a lot of 33s closer. half moon bay 316789 livermore 35 but ones we get cranked up it will be sunny and mild to warm. there's a system coming in on saturday. not a big deal. any precip today will be slightly warmer, tomorrow will be cooler and after that we start to bring back in more high pressure and sunny and warmer temperatures. by this time next week i could be talking about a lot of lower and middle 70s. mid 60s in there. temperatures closer to seasonal averages now. way below on tuesday. chinese new years parade if you're going bundle up. it will be a little chilly out there. so cool and breezy. upper 40s to very, very low 50s. after saturday's cool down, sunshine and warmer temperatures. >> all right. thank you, steve. a major snowstorm working it's way toward the northeast this morning. that's after wreaking havoc in the midwest. the storm swept through 20 states dumping as much as 14- inches of snow in some regions. in missouri, the stretchous

granted bail for olympic track star oscar pistorius who is accused of killing his girlfriend. right now we don't know the bail amount. oscar pistorius will now be free from custody pending his trial. we're going to bring you live reports from south africa on this breaking story coming up on mornings on 2. >> back here at home, police in redwood city busy trying to figure out what lead to a deadly crash on bay shore road. about 2:00 this morning police is a a woman lost control of her car and hit and fire hydrant and power pole and died at the scene. >> also authorities are still searching for a suspect on the shooting at the las vegas strip. we're looking at incorrect video right now but a native of oakland was killed while driving his car. we'll bring you all the details on that story coming up in just a couple of minutes. >> new this morning, san francisco police are issuing a warning to the asian community in particular. there is a scam targeting older

chinese people brian flores is in san francisco with how scammers are preying on their victims. >> good morning. this is actually a scam that we have been talking about for several months now. it happened at least several times within this year but it's gotten to the point now where san francisco police will be discussing it with the chinese community sometime this afternoon to discuss this scam. now the latest scam happened in january. but the thing with all the chinese new year celebrations, especially around the corner is that the scammers could be targeting victims again. what the scam is, it involves three or four typically chinese women according to the police and they approach an unsuspecting chinese woman on foot. the suspects will tell the victim that one of them is sick or cursed and the only way to get rid of tillness or curse is to have the victim's valuables blessed in some way. the victim would give thes to the suspect and they would put them in some type of bag and

then switch the bag giving the victim worthless items back and tell the victims not to open the bag until they get home t. happened to at least 50 victims here in the bay area and they believe it's continuing to grow. >> it's been going on here in san francisco. we have known about for it at least a year. we have had several series with different suspects and at this point, we have three separate arrests of different suspects. two of the teams are going to trial and the third will be going to trial soon. >> and talking about those arrests, police say six people in may and four people last november were arrested. police also say it's continuing and that the suspects are mostly from china and they also say san francisco isn't the only area that's affected. other cities include lass have a gas, new york, chicago,

boston and seattle. again, san francisco police department going to address the issue with the chinese community sometime this afternoon. we're live here in san francisco, ktvu channel 2 news. >> investigation into what caused a crane to collapse in the san francisco bay continues this morning. the large crane was working to remove temporary support structures on the new eastern span of the bay bridge when it toppled over trying to remove a 250,000-pound steal beam. four workers were at the base of the new bridge tower at the time but no one was seriously hurt. the incident is not expected to delay the planned opening for the new bridge on labor day weekend. >> time is 6:49. word from los angeles that a police hunch lead to the manhunt for christopher dorner. he was fired from the lapd in 2009 for making false statements about his training officer. this officer says she had a nagging feeling that christopher dorner killed a couple earlier this morning for revenge against the woman's

father. a former police captain and one of the people dorner blamed for being fired. they soon found a manifesto he posted online. even though he is dead now t training officer says she still fares for her life and has not yet gone home. >> the state of california has some of the toughest gun laws in america, including a ban on assault weapons but there's a growing number of illegal weapons coming into california. a lot of them are coming from nevada where there are very few restrictions on firearms. ktvu recently went under cover at a gun show in reno and we talked to one man that wrongly claimed we would walk away with a semi automatic weapon for $1,800 cash. >> if he did buy it, how would it work for him to be able to. >> register online. >> okay with serial number and all of that. >> yeah. >> is there a background check or anything. >> no. >> you have the cash, you can just take it and go. >> you just take it and go. >> people in california that

time is 6:56, the perm information of more than 3,000 customers maybe at risk after thieves robbed the mercedes dealership atwal nut creek. it happened about two weeks ago but it wasn't cars they were after. they stole thousands of personal files. a phone message was sent to customers but some are saying the warning didn't come soon
